I was once at a Farbrengen/ gathering where Rabbi Nissen Mangel spoke. He is a Holocaust survivor. He has an amazing story, as he was in the line, and may his memory be blotted out, Mengele asked him how old he was, and for some reason, he said that he felt that if he stuck out his stomach, he’d look older. So he said that he’s 16. He was really 10. So Mengele laughed and he let him go to the side, to the right. And he was a young kid. Unfortunately, they had murdered all the children, so they didn’t know what he was doing there, so they put him in the hospital where the monster was doing experiments. And he said that he wondered why did they have moldy bread to eat. If Hitler wanted to give them bread, give bread, but why moldy bread? And yet, he said that in the camps, nobody was getting ill. Now we know from mold, that mold has penicillin. So I was thinking to myself, the beauty of a Jew – is seeing the good in moldy bread. Here’s a person who really had a positive attitude in life, which is really extraordinary, seeing what he went through. Now I want to tell you that I gave it some thought. Why did Hitler give moldy bread? If he’s giving bread, why not give bread? But why moldy bread? And I realized that Hitler was trying to humiliate. You see, behind all bullies, behind all anti-Semites, behind those that say they are freedom fighters and about justice, and the vigilantes, people like Obama, busy criticizing everyone, is one word. It’s humiliation. They’ve been humiliated. It’s what’s behind and creates narcissism. It’s what makes us go from being comfortable with ourselves to uncomfortable, from being comfortable with others, to actually needing to put them down, because we become jealous.
