Rabbi Sholom B. Wineberg’s Eternal Joy series presents the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s teachings on marriage as a sacred, lifelong mission rather than merely a personal relationship. The central themes include:
- Marriage is life’s most important partnership. The Rebbe describes it as the union of two halves of one soul, becoming “one flesh” in a lifelong bond.
- Marriage has a Divine purpose. It is not only for companionship, but to build a Jewish home, bring children into the world, and create a dwelling place for G-d through Torah and mitzvos.
- Shalom Bayis (peace in the home) is a spiritual priority. Harmony comes through mutual respect, kindness, patience, and a willingness for each spouse to give freely rather than demand from the other.
- Husband and wife are partners. Each has unique strengths and responsibilities, but both share the common goal of creating a home filled with holiness, warmth, and joy.
- Marriage requires continual growth. Love is strengthened through daily acts of consideration, honest communication, forgiveness, and focusing on the other’s virtues rather than shortcomings.
- The spiritual atmosphere of the home matters. Torah study, prayer, mitzvos, and proper observance bring Divine blessing into the marriage and help overcome difficulties.
- Challenges are opportunities for growth. Difficulties should not be viewed as signs that the marriage has failed, but as opportunities to deepen commitment, seek wise guidance, and strengthen the relationship.
- Marriage is an eternal covenant. The Rebbe repeatedly emphasizes that marriage mirrors the everlasting bond between G-d and the Jewish people and should therefore be approached with permanence, dedication, and holiness.
