Now there are 3 basic options. The first is, it is effectively our ego. The young child falls in love with itself. It assumes that its cries created the parents giving it what it wants, which is why, when you don’t give the child what it wants by the age of 2, they start throwing tantrums. And it’s not like the ego got crushed, it just got mollified, and so our ego or love for ourselves – which in a way is very important – because a depressed person is somebody who hates themselves from shame or something else…. So the bottom line is that that is in a sense the core of the person, which of course is not the highest, a person can be. The highest is to be “possessed” by truth and have that override the ego, and of course, the worst case scenario is that a person is possessed by anger. And then the very ego becomes a tool of self and other destruction.”
