I’ll never forget the moment – it was a moment etched into my soul – you see I grew up with respect – I grew up in America, in where we were taught all people were created equal – however having been a Rabbi of a community and dealing with people from a foreign culture – where (as often is the case – “might is right” and “respect” is power/abuse) I had to dissociate – stop having the same level of respect – and in that moment I realized that at the very core of good and evil, love and hate – the only way you can tell who is or isn’t kind (for every person imagines that they are kind… – even those who are every cruel) is: Do you have respect? – BTW the first person you need to respect is yourself!
