The three patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob represent archetypes.
Why three?
The answer is, each shows us a fundemental aprouch:
Abraham – unconditional-love.
Isaac – unconditional-reverence for God/justice.
But Jacob seem to show us nothing; yet precisely he is actually called the best.
For though Abram has unconditional love, he was too loving! hence Yishmoel, the archetype of selfishness! (the opposite of selfless love) also was his child.
And though Isaac had perfect reverence for God/justice; Eisav, a harsh warrior also (for this is when we externalize harshness, hence instead of worrying about MY justice, I become the JUDGE JURY and EXECUTIONER).
But in fact Jacob is quite simply put a JEW – “simple”, as the Bible calls him, “a sincere person who studies”
It is this very simplicity that allows his mind to not be skewed by idealistic utopian ideals, rather dealing with reality.
