What I have discovered about life in my past forty years of philosophizing ; ) – the truth is that as the Rebbe says, there are three dimensions: the first dimension is the physical world; of the physical world we need very very little – yes, we need food security, we need shelter security, we obviously need security from harm; but in terms of money, more than that we don’t need – in fact, the drive for money is either a desperate need for recognition or a common need for recognition (though having money to do more good is the greatest good!) the second is the spiritual reality – now the spiritual reality is a highly complex, for we are born into a physical reality, with physical people, chasing physical stupidities, and this itself is only for the spiritual reality; for unless we becomes disillusioned with the physical people, included ourselves, in the physical world, chasing physical stupidities, we have no need, hence true desire for spirituality – once we embark on the quest for truth, after what I suppose is at least a decade, God in his goodness and kindness will say “Hello!”, but here is where the third dimension – namely God, for the spiritual nirvana, the utopistic dream, the bliss of knowing God, is what is simply called in Chassidus a high – God’s aim is not for us to live on a high (like a drug addict) rather for us to grow – now growth means abandoning pleasure – something which is as difficult as ignoring pain – but eventually by hook or by “circumstance” we will be forced to let go of our high and touch earth again – and then the real purpose for creation, namely, a mature relationship – not one which is all about me and my feelings, rather about us, about walking humbly to do more good envelopes
