Succinctly speaking, Kabbalah divides the world into three columns.

The right, left and center

The right column is attraction – there are positive and negative attractions, there is love and lust, kindness and greed etc.

The left column is fears – there is positive and negative fears, there is the fear of disobeying God and there is the fear of man, there is the fear of disconnecting from God and there is the fear of not receiving recognition – in addition, fear is the path to the dark side, as the Baal Shem Tov calls anger, negative-fear (because if something wouldn’t create fear, you wouldn’t get angry – for example, if you knew that mosquitos automatically die when they come close to you, you wouldn’t fear hence hate them.)

Then there is the center – for the right and left column are attraction/fears – in fact, every animal operates on these, based on the biologically programed instinctual compulsions (so though different animals may have different foods they like, they share in common the attraction to the pleasure coming from activating the reward glands in the brain food gives them and likewise they fear pain etc.)

The one thing that makes a human unique, is his ability to get beyond his innate fear, beyond his innate loves – ultimately we need to let go even of our positive love and fear, for anything which is a compulsion is also a restriction.

We need to, in the famous AA adage: “Let go and Let God.”

In other words, the highest level is not loving or fearing God, rather allowing God to direct you – this is why the first statement to a spiritual seeker (Abraham) from God, was, “Let go of your instincts, your desires, your land, and go where I will tell you.”
