The mind is literally like a computer – the brain has a hardrive (memory) ram (active thoughts) but what it is thinking about will depend on the software – fear produces, well fearful scenarios (mainly, so a person can avoid them, whereas someone who isn’t fearful, will literally not see, think or imagine fearful scenarios) Desire/love/wanting produces a chemical reaction to the fantasy (for example, if someone is thinking about sex, they feel a certain high – this is why people often get stuck in desire/love/wanting thinking, because the very thoughts already produce, based on the fantasy of achieving it – like “winning the lotto” – a minor pleasure and pleasure is addictive) Ultimately, reality, truth and wisdom are offshoots both of the Divine souls desire for discovering it, but even more so, painful experiences, for as pleasure is pleasurable, so is pain painful; hence, as we wish to avoid pain, we ultimately have the mind learn how not to react, but to consciously think (and the way to overcome fear is through faith, trust, as well as seeing the positive blessings, including hope (Moshiach etc.) and the trick is, to not fall back into desire/love/wanting pleasure thinking.)
