Once upon a time, people believed that this universe was controlled by many demonic forces – they sacrificed sometimes even their children – to appease the great egos.
We have remnants of these vast temples – unfortunately skulls of children – all for, placating the egos of these vicious forces, controlling rain, the sun etc. so they should be appeased and provide.
Then Abraham came on the scene and through a simple logical deduction realized, that if the sun didn’t shine, the rain didn’t fall, and a million other natural factors working in tandem didn’t occur, a single seed can’t grow; hence, there must be a single force in which all of these alternative forces are simply subservient tools creating a picture so real, as we are deluded, that it is reality.
Abraham sought truth and as the saying “when you seek the truth, the truth will find you” hence the unifier, the Creator spoke to Abraham.
We also know that God, as we call this unifier / Creator, also spoke to Mosses – freed the Jews from bondage – and for the only time in human history, spoke to an entire nation, men, women and children, numbering in the millions, revealing Ten-Commandments, setting the foundation for people to live, not as game theory calls it, a zero-sum game “me or you,” “us or them,” rather, with love, with compassion, with decency, with integrity.
The descendents of these people carried these values after their dispersion from their homeland for the past two thousand years to the four corners of the globe (how does a round sphere, have four corners; but whose to argue with language?!)
Today, the God of Abraham is the ethical underpinning of any civilized society, encompassing the vast majority of the known world.
But what exactly did God say to Abraham in his first revelation?
You see, there were always two dimensions to God, the revealed and the concealed.
In Judaism there is likewise two dimensions, the revealed and the esoteric or concealed.
So while most of us believe in a singular unifier / Creator, who expects us to be moral, practically none of us know His secret.
As Einstein said: “God has yet to reveal his true secret but when he does I am sure it will be both simple and beautiful.”
For Einstein was a great believer in God, his entire pursuit of science was in his words to, “Discover the mind of God.”
Hence he a. knew God was meticulous, absolute Divine, yet he searched his whole life for a theory which unites the disparate elements God created, but couldn’t find it.
The reason he couldn’t find it, is, as Kabbalah teaches, there is no unity in diversity except through God.
In other words, only through each individual finding a common higher purpose, do the many diverse elements have a mutual goal.
And this was in fact the true inner dimension of the Divine will of the Divine message to Abraham and that which can and please God will redeem both your own spirit/soul and the collective consciousness, uniting the diverse people, forces, into a unified progressive whole.
You see Einstein famously said, “There are only two ways to live – one as though everything is a miracle the other as though nothing is” – for Einstein like many before and after him can perceive of either, a natural state of existence or a supernatural.
But the truth is way beyond that.
One of the great difficulties Einstein had, was in quantum physics, for as we know he said to Heisenberg who discovered quantum physics, namely Heisenberg’s principle of uncertainty, which simply stated is we have absolutely no way to measure the behavior of atoms, “God doesn’t play dice with the universe.”
Einstein was certain, everything must be predictable, because he created a premise, that God is.
But the facts show a different story altogether – something beyond human comprehension – for there are two universes – physical, that exist simultaneously – the first is Heisenberg’s, the second is Newton’s- when we send a mission to space we don’t use Heisenberg’s, rather Newtonian physics, because though in absolute truth they are not true, in a functional sense they are.
An example for this is quite simply, in an absolute sense your recycle bin in your computer is not a real garbage can, but it really allows you to get rid of the garbage on your computer.
Another factual example which is beyond everyone’s comprehension, is the fact that as quantum physics teaches, essentially two universes exist – when we are, or aren’t looking at it – for when you are not looking at an atom (all matter) it behaves as a wave, but when you are looking at it, as a particle (imagine that just like waves come in wave format onto the shore but whenever you don’t look, it’s actually flat.)
So what nobody can comprehend, is, that the same thing can simultaneously be anything, because it never was something to begin with.
The fundamental error we all make, is the premise that things exist.
Once you change the premise, and that is, that only God exists, then anything else that exists is not real, it is at best, like an item in our imagination.
So just like you can instantaneously change your imagination, so the screen (your brain) may be the backdrop, but the movie can always shift; similarly, instead of thinking of reality as a continuum and all of our scientific research is “what is it?” we need to understand, the only reality that exists is God.
The conclusion of all of the above is fairly simple: if the only real reality is God and we are creations stimulated into existence continuously, it means, who we are cannot be defined (for of -course if God wishes, a worm can turn into a butterfly and similarly, anything can become anything).
And this is the secret that God revealed to Abraham and is the ultimate message of Jewish mysticism: “Lech Lichah” Move beyond, to become your true soul.
For just as we see reality opposite to how it is (namely, first we think it exists than we seek its source; when it truth, first the source exists and only then does it magically appear) similarly, who we are – first and foremost we are Divine, capable of infinite transformations, growth, new paradigms, better character dispositions, but in order to get to this infinite stage of our true identity, we must first shed our conception of our fixed identity.
Hence it was only after 75 years of Abraham toiling, teaching about God, that God said in plain English: you have yet to discover who I am or who you are.
Practically, this is the path of Chassidus, revealed by the Baal Shem Tov, that God is not only the revelation at Mount Sinai, the moral, charitable instructions of Judaism but in fact God is relating to us all the time!
As the Baal Shem Tov taught, everything that comes into our consciousness, the sights you encounter, the words you hear, the experiences you experience and sometimes even thoughts which somehow pop into our head which we don’t know where they came from, all are the infinite wavelength.
The Baal Shem Tov taught, God is in everything and everything is a life-lesson.
Asks the Mitteleh Rebbe: prior to the Baal Shem Tov, millions of pious Jews believed in God, yet the basic notion was that God’s accessibility was only to great prophets, saintly men or women; and he explains (it’s just like our two views of the universe as explained before) when you are not looking, all you see is a mechanical universe, but when you are, you hear the calling of God, his guidance to you – and again, as you are infinite, so too is his guidance, leading you to ever more sublime truths and growth – calling you from every aspect, from every turn, from within and from without, leading you to fulfill the true Divine being that is your true self.
