Life as we can see – as one older Jew told me “I have been alive for over eighty years and never has the world not been in chaos” – so life certainly has problems
But the big question is, why?
In those immortal words of Rodney King: “why can’t we all get along?!”
To understand why there have been world wars, civil wars, and sadly, family wars; we must understand who we are, what makes us tick?!
Fundamentally, as Kabbalah teaches us, we are a combination of three rulers – operating systems and each one cancels out the other –
Ideally, we should be using our minds, following what we think is the right path!
However, our minds as we all know, are usually not our rulers (dieting, giving up an addiction; being a good example) our minds are usually slaves to our passions – the heart – which unfortunately has a simple operating system (used by all animals) and that is, do what is pleasurable, stay away from what is painful!
But if that was the case, why at worst case scenario, wouldn’t humans be like animals, in which say, after the sexual instinct is taken care of, apart from territory for food, there are no world wars, civil wars and even family wars?!
The answer is both sadly simple, and unfortunately as the Baal Shem Tov teaches, buried in the recesses of our subconscious (In other words, unaware to us;) we have an ego – the ego is our innate desire for supremacy!
