Of course, Chassidus, the wisdom of Kabbalah, the soul of Judaism, is both, truth behind Judaism’s and more importantly behind the reality we live in – now even within Chassidus we find different emphasess, certainly an almost infinite amount of reasons behind creation, Mitzvos etc. etc. but as the Rebbe says, there is but one truth, and many mistakes
So to get to the bottom line, which really is the single reason why God created this world, one must study the last four years of the Rebbe’s teachings, in which the same point is said – again, in a thousand different ways – but the point is the clarification of what Dirah Bitachtionim, that the reason God desires to create the world, was he wanted to dwell in it; means:
In other words, three layers of reality exist, the first is the one we see – the second is the spiritual cosmos, there are basically four universes that precede ours, they contain heaven, they contain angels; our souls are born or go through transitional stages, as they descend into our bodies – in effect, there are literally thousand upon thousands of books by the Kabbalistic masters describing these universes, what goes on in them etc. – but, and here is the point the Rebbe emphasized, God is equidistant from the spirit as he is from matter; to God, energy, Atzilus, and a rock, a human, are no closer or further.
A good example to help us understand this is from an artist’s canvas; though say there may be people, suns, moons etc. etc. on his painting, to the artist, both the sun, moon, people, grains of sand are no closer or further, for he is equally, their creator.
Once we understand there is no higher nor lower, only to human perspective; this strengthens the question – for what reason would God create all of these paradigms, perceptions, light / darkness?!
And it boils down to a simple emotion, called love.
God loves you with all his heart and soul; just as a parent (at least loving parents – normal parents) love their children, unconditionally!
Now the emotion of love, creates a desire to unify with the beloved.
Simultaneously, as true love is not the annihilation, the subjugation; rather the simultaneous elevation, respect, together with unification of the other, God created us as freely independently minded people.
Hence, it is when we learn to see the contrast between the folly of people’s narcissistic and instinctual desires, that hold nothing for us; and learn to appreciate God’s wisdom, light and love, that we choose God!
Once we choose God – and this is perhaps the most novel idea the Rebbes teaches – as God is infinite, he is not limited to those universes which are beyond us – an unlimited Creator is equally at home in heaven as he is at earth, as the verse states “if I go to heaven there you are, if I go to hell there you are” (again it’s only from the perspective of light and darkness, more or less revealed light, Godliness, truth, that we have such a notion of higher and lower, which is only from a human’s concealed perspective; hence that which is revealed is less concealed; but from the perspective of truth, as mentioned, higher and lower don’t even exist.)
