There are only five categories of people – the rarest of rare – a single or two in a generation – like the Rebbe – and the saintly Nosi – Rebi of the Jewish people in every generation, in whom only good, with no desire for instinctual gratification whatsoever, exists – the next is one who has conquered his desires for instinctual gratification, yet hasn’t transformed them into a fiery love for all that is good either (of this it states perhaps 12,000 exist in a generation) – more common of course, is the rest of us, composites of both good and bad instincts, anger and love, pride and revenge, graciousness and the occasional evil stemming from jealousy – but germane to most of us is a sense of compassion and hence a sense of feeling guilty if our evil gets the better of us – lower than this is what is commonly called a psychopath, someone who revels in sadism – which is why there are sadistic people – for terrorists are not motivated out of love, rather malice, and their souls are so sullied that their only joy is sadistically torturing others, which is the only (and true) explanation for their sadistic behavior – but then Rabbi Shnuer Zalman of Liadi teaches us, there is the ultimate level, for the average soul, the Benoine – not that we have become saints, yet through a combination of tremendous love for God, tremendous fear of being separate from God, hence adherence to the Biblical laws of kindness and not evil, we control our tempers!!!
