The thing is this, what are the choices life has to offer?

The holy Alter Rebbe, the author of the bible of Chassidus, called the Tanya writes, if you give a humble man something, he becomes more humble, but if you give an arrogant man something he becomes more arrogant.

Now, why would someone become more arrogant, if you GIVE him something?

It all depends on you basic premise.

If we see the world as a loving gift from an altruistic creator, then everything extra we receive, makes us feel more indebted, hence humbler.

However if – as is perhaps the natural instincts – we see the world as a location in which we are the ones who provide our own gifts, hence everything we receive actually makes us feel more empowered.
