First there was chaos, then came Torah, then came Chassidus
Chassidus revolutionized Judaism
No longer was it o.k. to be modern orthodox a word that contradicts itself, like Jews for Jesus, for if your were orthodox you weren’t modern, for modern means on one hand your worldview is that value system of licentious, throwing off the yoke of God rather Chassidus was to instill the yoke of God, to embrace God, to see God not as the burden but as the solution.
So in my feeble mind I thought to myself, what does it mean to be chassidish?
And hence the answer is as the Baal Shem Tov emphasized, the main thing is to be connected.
Chassidus is connection.
It is primarily the connection of Jews to each other, but this occurs through the connection in though speech and action to our common link, our source, our soul and ultimately the soul of all sources, hence all souls, God.
Practically this means that to be Chassidish, to follow the path laid forth by the Baal Shem Tov continued by our holy pious wise Rebbes is effectively three things number one it means that one chooses to have God as their guide, number two, it means that one practically places ones thoughts speech and action continually into what God would desire for your thoughts speech and action to be at any given moment (this is not the place to discus what that is) and thirdly one does not assume some kind of spiritual superiority for doing such, for to do so would negate the entire point of connection for connection is only possible between people who see themselves and one another as equals not one who sees himself to be spiritually greater than another, so it is to realize that the first thing God desires is in fact this choice, and for this choice to occur, God must create an agnostic world, place holy souls in there – no less holy than yours and perhaps even holier – so that they should find their way home.
