What is infinity?

Most of us think of infinity as infinite numbers.

That is a type of infinity.

However there are three levels.

Limited

Infinite

And true infinity

Infinite, can be the unlimited version of the limited, hence infinite numbers.

True infinity, can combine numbers with non numbers.

Space with non space.

Thought with non thought.

Everything we perceive exists in one of two states, it either is or isn’t something.

I am a number or not.

I am spatial or not.

I am thought or not.

True infinity can combine opposites.

Ultimately, true infinity is the truth of reality, and this is how it works.

We are limited.

We perceive, think, feel, in temporal (time-based) spatial reality, (even if you recall memory, you recall it in a sequential order like watching a movie, the time and space is imparted on the event.)

On the other hand, God is neither limited to space nor time, nor unlimited to be beyond them, he can be both at the same time.

So where we see true infinity in our lives, is in growth.

For when you take us, who presumably we could be like the animals – think how no animal specie has ever outgrown itself – monkeys have always been and always will be monkeys, dogs, cats, etc.

There are many human societies that have remained unchanged as far back as we can perceive.

So to take a human and have him grow, to take a selfish creature and make him selfless, and then for him to constantly grow – as the Rebbe teaches us Hashem demands of us – that is only through the power of true infinity in our lives.

This is why all human ethical growth came only through a Divine hand.

All feeble human attempts at superimposing ethics without God failed dismally – the Germans, the greatest proponents of this, showed themselves to be the greatest slaves to the basest instincts know to man.

It is precisely the power of God to recreate the very same thing into a new thing, and the miracle of recreation – as God is truly infinite – can reoccur all the time.
