Now there are four possible drivers of your car.

The highest level is the level of Merkavah, where God himself communicating directly to you tells you what to do – this is a very very  very high level, achieved by Rebbes, the forefathers etc. It is very hard, for by nature people abhor what they cannot comprehend.

Even Moses who must have been a Merkavah, was found in contempt of court (God,) for questioning God’s ways.

The next highest level, which we all should aspire to, though few of us do this (perhaps women more than men) is using our intellect to guide our decisions.

So decisions should not be made irrationally based on emotions – decisions should be carefully considered and acted without any emotional basis rather precisely to do what we perceive is correct or incorrect based on God’s Jewish guidelines namely the Torah.

The third level which most of us today fall into is emotions. The heart has a natural love / fear, mechanism, which is the source of our mind’s thoughts, our speech talking, and our body’s actions. So if I fall in love with someone I use endearing words to unite with them, if I fall out of love with someone, I use distancing words to distance myself from them.

The same applies to anything the heart desires, say food (“pass me the cake” – “take that cake away from me” etc. etc.)

Of course the down side of this is that we are merely sophisticated animals, allowing our emotions to dictate our actions, which is the modern mess the world finds itself in today, and why there is such a strong search for the second and first system.

Last but not least, in severe cases (and as the case with fundamentalist Islam, terrorists, antisemites and even within all cultures, the arrogant self appointed demigods) when a person’s ego mandates their thoughts, speech, and actions.

In this case, the person ceases to even be themselves, they are dominated by a obnoxious need to be in the limelight at all costs.
