Why would the first words God speaks to a Jew be about moving? We must therefore say, that this does not only represent a technical move, rather this is a spiritual deed (for even something which serves as a preparation for another event in Judaism, itself has extraordinary significance.) Sefer Hasichois 5750 It is known that the command to Avrohom to Lech Licha, move, was the preceding event toward the giving of the Torah. Hence (based on above) it is obvious that the command of Lech Licha represents the individual and collective mission of the Jewish people. The command of Lech Licha is that no matter the physical perception which you were born into and is shared by your society, there is a spiritual reality which transcends the rules of logic and nature. A Jew through deciding to serve God can elevate himself beyond the mundane and in addition elevate those around him and the world. Etiquette – a word lost – in simple English it means common-decency – in Jewish terminology it means: Don’t be a jerk and treat people nicely
