Why ego matters

Why ego matters

Once upon a time a producer made a play.

In his play of-course there would be a lead character.

Of-course all characters wish to be the lead.

So he found a beautiful actress and he told her she would have the part.

She was thrilled with an incredible joy – she would be a starlet!

But lo and behold when it came time for acting, the director found another beautiful actress and cast aside his first choice.

Enraged, her mind began to find every evil imaginable in the producer, a liar, a cheat, selfish!!

Her heart would give her no rest, she told whoever she could about what a terrible person this man was.

Now we need to ask a question, why would the other actresses who didn’t get the lead role in the first place, not feel this way.

The answer is simple – the ego is a desire for grandeur.

However we do understand that we are nothing (hopefully – in fact what happens is, as we assume all that comes our way is our grandeur’s greatness, hence a little child, constantly fed, burped etc. hence the grandeur’s ego becomes convinced of his centrality to the universe – which is why developing this conviction he throws tantrums when he can’t drive the car or anything else his mind fancies; but then he learns he is nothing and in that realization he accepts reality) However, once the grandeur’s ego manifests – once the person deludes himself or gets deluded that he is truly great, he regresses to the infantile ego grandeur state.

Now imagine the following scenario – the starlet came from Africa – she always felt humbled to live in America – the very fact she got to Broadway was like a miracle in her eyes – when she was chosen to be the lead character she thought it must be some kind of joke – she, an African immigrant… – and so when she lost it, she held no resentment.

And this my friends is the truth, for each and everyone one of us, unless every morning when we wake up thank-God for all our blessings, we become (if God does grant us any success which hopefully he will) the first, not the true star/let.
