Why did Hillel frame the commandment to love your fellow as yourself, in the negative, “that which you do not want another to do to you, do not do to them?” because within this, a great secret of human psychology (and its lesson) exits – if another says “you stink” you may become very angry at them – though you yourself may know you stink – the reason is as follows, for when you know you stink, as you have a great love for yourself, the fact that you know you stink, doesn’t cause you to get hot under the collar, rather, it is overlooked; but when someone highlights and creates a negative out of what to you is nothing, your anger is aroused – and hence, the lesson is, that just as we can handle our own faults for our self-love buries their potency; similarly, if our love toward our fellow man was true, we would not be bothered at all by their shortcomings.
