What is the root of all evil?

In this weeks (past) Torah portion, the Jews were commanded to fight midyan.
The Hebrew word for midyan, comes for the words madoin, umerivah, which means strife and arguments
Seemingly, it makes no sense
Why would we, social creatures by nature, engage in the foolishness of who’s right or wrong
As the Ra”n says: “why do children continue playing without holding grudges but adults know how to fume?! Because to children, playing is more important than being right!”
So why is being right so important to us?!
To understand this we must disentangle our ego from our opinions.
A true opinion has nothing to do with being right.
It is simply put truth (or at least what I perceive to be correct).
Now whenever “I need to be right!” it is a function of my ego.
