Nothing can stand in the face of willpower, our sages teach us
Kabbalah and Chassidus go into a lengthily determination if desire or pleasure is the stronger.
Ultimately it resolves, pleasure motivates desire but desire can change pleasure.
In other words, the very fact that I want something, will create a pleasurable result if I attain it even if it inherently has no pleasure associated to it.
The greatest mistake man makes – particularly western man – is, pleasurable results are the ultimate goal.
The fact is, that pleasurable results can shift into non-pleasurable, or pleasure, based on the desire attached to the results.
In simple English – if you want to win something, then you will enjoy winning it, but if you don’t want to win something, then you will be upset that you won it.
So as we understand the centrality of desire not pleasure to life, we need to reframe life.
What is it that is desirable to desire?
