We live in a four dimensional universe as both Kabbalah and Einstein teach, space and time, but as science cannot see the unobservable reality, there is a fifth dimension called Souls

Kabbalah goes into great detail as to what a soul is, how it functions

Succinctly, a soul comes from a source, as it states “God’s candle is man’s soul”

The soul mimics its source, hence the Divine soul in man, is compassion, love, altruism; the animal soul in man is selfish loves, fear for its own safety etc.

A soul effectively has five compartments divided into essential characteristics then subservient abilities

The essence of the soul is what gives it pleasure and its desire to not have pain

The soul then has a mind that like a computer or calculator allows it to figure out how to achieve its pleasure or stay away from its pains

The soul also has a memory, an instinct toward that which it’s either hardwired to desire as in the case of all lower animals and the actual pleasurable or painful experiences as in the case of mammals, humans; so we get attracted toward and refrain from experientiol pleasure and pain (which is why people become both addicts and neurotic)

The actual clothing – modes of fulfillment of the hearts – instinctual – desires – memories of the soul, comes via thought – self communication – speech – outward communication and in animals their many different types of barks (for example) are communication of desire or aggression and they have countless other communication systems (such as a peacocks plumage etc.)

And finally there is the hands or feet’s ability to physically, say pick something up, go to where the heart desires etc. etc.

But the purpose of this long speech is not to teach you about the makeup of a soul, rather getting back to the original point, every universe – certainly ours – is primarily soul inhabited!

And this is the great lesson from Chassidus, for everything, be it the energy behind matter, which science has shown reacts to love or hate, be vegetables which studies prove react to love or hate, be it animals which certainly react to love or hate or – and especially humans – whom need love more than food and cower desperately from shame/hate and ultimately God Himself, who also reacts to love or hate, hence everything boils down to the Baal Shem Tov’s teaching Fear no one or anything (for we cannot love what we fear) and love with all your heart and soul!
