Unlimited vs. Infinite

Unlimited vs. Infinite

Today someone asked me, “If G-d is unlimited, what does that actually mean?”

Many people assume that “unlimited” simply means “infinite.” But they are not exactly the same thing.

Something infinite is still a particular thing that continues without end. The sequence of numbers is infinite. A line can extend infinitely. Time can be imagined as continuing forever. Infinity describes an endless expression of something specific. But it takes something unlimited both to make the finite and then to keep it infinitely going!

Unlimited means there is no limitation whatsoever on ability or potential. It is not merely that something goes on forever—it is that there is absolutely nothing preventing any possibility.

Think about your own mind. You have the ability to think countless thoughts. The potential to think is far greater than any individual thought. Every thought is limited, but the capacity to produce thoughts is vastly greater.

What do we know about G-d?

Chassidus teaches that we know G-d exists. We know He is absolutely good. And we know that He possesses no limitations whatsoever.

From that unlimited ability come two fundamental powers:

– The unlimited power of revelation.
– The unlimited power of concealment.

Because G-d is unlimited, He could create infinitely many universes if He so desired. Even the continual existence of this universe depends every moment on His unlimited creative power.

Yet He also possesses the unlimited ability to conceal Himself.

Here is the remarkable point:

If G-d were to reveal Himself completely, nothing independent could exist.

Imagine if the sun suddenly increased its light without limit. Everything would be overwhelmed by its brilliance. Nothing else would remain distinguishable.

Creation exists because revelation is always accompanied by concealment. G-d continuously gives existence while simultaneously concealing the overwhelming intensity of His Presence, allowing the world—and us—to experience ourselves as independent beings.

Every revelation contains concealment, and every concealment is a gift as it allows our revelation.

That, my dear friends, is really amazing.
