Understanding stand-offishness

So how about this one
Amazing, I just met this really wealthy individual who in a joking way (as we just know each other by face) says to me “You don’t write, email, fax, call…”
So I stepped forward to give him a hug in a mock apology (and it is always good to hug your fellow same-gender Jew) but he instinctively, reflexively took a fear based step back.
You see – if we trust our fellow man we fear them not.
Many of us however have for good reason had our trust in fellow man shattered.
