Today I gave a lecture and one of the things I mentioned was the Kabbalistic doctrine of inspiration and perspiration – I mentioned, that never before has humanity had it so good – never before has there been so much prosperity, freedom etc. etc. and seems on the whole, this has led in two opposite directions – one is the direction of escapism – having lived in Africa for many years I can say, what is clear, the poor blacks don’t care about truth, they care solely about money – growing up dirt poor – we cannot imagine literally having to choose between buying a meal or a lotto ticket and the lotto ticket unfortunately wins – their dreams are escaping their misery but they see money as god – However when we grow up and realize money is only a bonus because you won’t be able to eat more – at most, maybe go on a better vacation, so suddenly the world, becomes, well, boring! – life is like groundhog day, so we have multiple escapism, whether it is drugs, sex, video games etc. etc. – but what Jewish mysticism teaches, is there is only one heaven, only one truth, only one path to happiness! that is Moments of Inspiration, be it Prayer or Torah study and moments of Perspiration, getting your hands dirty and actually helping someone
