Today being such an amazing holy day perhaps I was blessed with a remarkable insight – what Judaism brought to the world is Personal Responsibility – this may seem like an obvious – but it isn’t – for the tendency of a human being is to abrogate, to sublimate, to delegate his or her responsibility – in fact fascinating well known studies were done trying to understand how the Germans – otherwise, very well mannered, normal people, were turned into sadistic monsters the likes that Genghis Kahn could have taken pride in – and so a professor had subjects in some kind of a room, and others were brought in and all this was under the guise of science and they were led to believe that the higher the voltage administered the person may even die – and yet the conclusion of the study was that when we feel someone else is responsible, we abrogate, sublimate and delegate!! – the first and perhaps still only (though thankfully its offsprings are many) reality, that taught “a son should not be killed for his father’s sins…” (in contrast, for example to the oldest “code” of Hammurabi which for shoddy building one could kill the builder’s son etc.) the notion that each and every person a. Should be responsible and b. Can be – and it is in essence this is what is at the current war between the “liberals” and conservative, for the former wish to abrogate sublimate and delegate and perhaps in essence have no consequences – be completely free (yet of course simultaneously protected; hence this “group think,” in which giving Obama or would have been Hillary, full power! – willing to forgo such sacred tenets as the First Amendment etc. all in this (though perhaps subconscious) pursuit) vs. those who realize that without personal responsibility, who are we…
