To understand life one must understand psychology – I had a dean of a Yeshivah (Talmudic college) who was also a Rabbi of a synagogue, he would always say “you have to understand the psychology of a Bucher” (student) “you have to understand the psychology of a Baaleh-Baas” (congregant) Without understanding… well we don’t – The first and foremost thing we must understand is we didn’t exist – hard to imagine, but say just 43 years ago my body and its perceptions, were not on this planet! – 120 years ago there wasn’t a single person living today! – almost every animal and plant as well! – so then how are we so passionate?!- so into our lives?! – the answer is that fundamentally we develop a love for ourselves – minus this love, well we are what is called depressed – amazingly, many people develop not only lack of love, but self-hate which is why they commit suicide – they’re hatred to themselves causes them to kill the self they hate – now if that doesn’t show how little we understand (for to kill oneself is to misunderstand who one is, for who is killing whom? – this is similar to the statement “I think therefore I am,” but who is the am that is thinking??) well I have already written too much (you see after I write I still need to edit and I am but a wee bit volunteer) So getting to the point, there are three fundamentals: a. we are our independent mind which assumes that we are our body, and then we pick up a second self-image, namely based on society, if we are good or bad, lovable, despicable etc. – obviously if we think highly of ourselves we are happy, if we think lowly, unhappy; if we are angry, we God-forbid may commit suicide – c. but here is where things get well really sick, you see if we are both depressed and egotistical – which though it may sound like an oxymoron, in fact it goes hand in hand – you see there can be two reasons for depression – the first is my brain decides that the body didn’t fulfill my wishes, so the ego gets upset (for anger is based on the ego’s expectation hence rage) however depression can also come about due to other people who I trusted (this is why amazingly nazis etc. never manged to kill the Jewish spirit, for Jews learned a long time ago to have little expectations) so when depression is from internalized hate, though from an external source – so now not only do I hate myself, I also hate the person who made me hate myself – in addition, I begin to feel it isn’t fair that others may feel pride – this is called jealousy – I am jealous that others have pride – and if you can understand this, you can understand why there are people who are a. depressed b. angry c. malicious
