To paraphrase Kabbalah: there are three motives and each has two – our highest motive is what is right and its corollary is not doing what is wrong – Our natural instinct (as in all animals) is doing what gives us a sense of biochemical pleasure (and this comes from food, and its various kinds; intercourse; music; even intellectual discoveries etc.) and staying away from anything that causes us a biochemical pain, (hunger, anxiety; so a lot of what we do, is to try to make ourselves safe, so we don’t feel fear.) Finally we desire recognition, and this is the crux: the corollary of recognition is we don’t desire shame – hence fundamentally those people who imagine (because someone shamed them, that they are perceived by others as shameful, develop narcissism (though to be fair, partialy in order to function as an independent person, one must)
