We are eternally conflicted between following our current animal desire, which is either for security and when in security, for fleeting pleasure, as well as for our bizarre desire for recognition, ego, grandeur, all of which will pass, the moment we get what we are fixated on.
Alternatively, we can fixate on our true healthy spiritual desires, such as, helping others, learning Torah, educating our children etc. etc.
