There is no doubt about it, that God created a universe in which we are meant to have relationships – but as the Rebbe teaches, for this to occur, God created a dynamic called mashpia and mikabel, giver and receiver – otherwise, there would be no basis for which people should unite – obviously as Chassidus teaches, the primary relationship is between husband and wife, who are also called mashpia and mikabel, but in truth, the reverse is the actual fact; for as our sages teach, whenever one thing protects another, it is the protector who has the true status of giver, though it may seem secondary; for example, the shell of a fruit protects the fruit, yet we discard it; the leaves of the vine protect the grapes, yet we also throw it out – similarly, though it may seem that the giver is the more dominant role, as our sages teach: “more than then giver gives, he receives through giving!”
