There is no bigger mistake that people (including Lubavitchers) make, thinking that the Rebbe innovated anything, the Rebbe’s job was simply like all the Rebbes going back to Abraham and Mosses before him, to reinterpret God’s desires for the times that we live in, which as the times we lived in called for a Ahavas Yisroel, sharing the beauty of Judaism with those who through no fault of their own did not merit a Jewish education due to the holocaust and other factors, and as the Rebbe stressed, spiritual guiding someone is perhaps even more important Ahavas Yisroel than physically helping them (though of course physical, material, financial assistance must precede spiritual assistance) thus it was the call of the hour and the the Rebbe guided us to the fact that this mission has been achieved and a new mission mainly to bring Moshiach through adding Torah and Mitzvos, goodness and kindness and in general to live as if Moshiach is here (a happy positive life) is the current call of the hour, so the Rebbe did not replace anything, rather as only a visionary with complete knowledge of the past, present and future can, applied Judaism’s guidance to the times and unique era we are in!
