There are ultimately only three possibilities: one is that people are loving, hence, say like parents to their children they give unstintingly without desire for reward – it is their pleasure to give, for they love their children – the other, is trade; hence people need other items, services, goods etc. from other people; hence they don’t care at all about the other person, but they need what the other person has – this is the principal of business – exchanging goods; it’s just that money has becomes a universal good, that instead of bartering items, people barter money and then use the money to purchase other goods.

But ultimately, the highest principle which the Forefathers attained, is the principal of “merkavah” nullifying your own emotions even positive ones (for as mentioned, we see what damage unchecked love, like an unchecked fire, as we see, say in the current absolutely corrupted – i.e. instead of sex being a tool for unity – see my booklet Kabbalah on Marital Intimacy, available on my website for more on this…) hence the ultimate paradigm, is to simply figure out what God’s (good) opinion is, setting aside your own subjective emotions for objective truth!
Practically there are three mechanisms to do this:
The easiest is, believe it or not, you can ask God! this is called machshavah rishsoinah (“First Thought”) namely, ask God any question you desire and the first thought of what to do will be God’s reply to you!
Secondly, you can (and should) study Judaism (the Torah and most importantly “The Code of Jewish Law”) which is a comprehensive though somewhat general guide to every situation in life.
Thirdly, the Rebbe clearly taught the Mishnaic dictum “Appoint a Rabbi Over Yourself” that everyone should regularly consult on all spiritual (life) questions, ideally a Chassidic Rabbi (hence schooled not only in Jewish law, but also in the spirit of the law, namely Jewish mysticism.)
