There are three motivators

 

 

the first is love – love has been extolled in the west in songs, in movies etc.

 

but the truth is love is selfish – for love is really lust

 

Then there is fear – we have done much to rid the western world of fear based discipline – this in reality is pretty good – for those societies that do things because of fear of shame / criticism / harsh parents, like the Germans, as we see empirically have not created good rather evil

 

Then there is the truth – truth is a long mountain climb and only after a tremendous amount of struggle – as the Mishna teaches: if one says (to paraphrase) I have discovered truth and it was easy, do not believe him – if one says, I searched for the truth but couldn’t find it, do not believe him – however if one says ‘I have striven with all my soul and all my heart to find the truth and thank God it was revealed to me only then believe it!’ – you see to implement truth (as opposed to discovering it ) takes self-discipline
