The ultimate goal not self actualization but self abnegation

By zevi770 · February 12, 2012

I recall a friend of mine while I was the Rabbi in Plett who was very into self actualization (unfortunately after he lost his fortune in the crash he has completely fallen apart for his self was determined by his assets.)

Self actualization and self abnegation are seemingly apposing ends of the spectrum, while one seems to be based on ego and the other the lack of ego, but people are wont to see self actualization as a better goal for in it you can stand tall while in self abnegation namely completely removing your ego to follow God (your Mashpia’s advice etc.) as a loss of prestige, so which is truer?

The answer of course is self abnegation.

You see, every ego boost we have, from winning an Olympic medal to making a lot of money etc. is ultimately a selfish desire and though it may require a tremendous amount of effort but the effort is selfishly motivated.

On the other hand, to completely devoid our will as our sages state “nullify your will before the will of the creator” always is what is called iskafiyah, namely the abnegation, abdication, the nullification of your ego and instincts in favor of Gods, so pray tell, which one is truly a bigger accomplishment?
