the three stages of growth – in the beginning, we think we are Go-d – now you may say, but I never did… – what was your earliest memory? three / four?- You see, psychologists say our basic identity is formed by two – I see it so clearly watching my little nieces, for when a child is born, as anyone can empirically see, they are emotionless – they are basically like any mammal, a biological animal – but within a few months they begin to smile, they register delight- by the time a human is two they see themselves (which is a natural healthy progression) as king of the world, as the Previous Rebbe said, “There is no greater egoist than a little child” – this is why they will throw a tantrum at not getting their wishes (for anger is commensurate with expectation – if I walk into my bank and they say, “We will not be giving you a thousand dollars!” I won’t get angry; but if they say “We will not be giving you your thousand dollars!” I probably will) the next stage of growth is identification – in this stage the child realizes that they are not the boss, so they begin to identify with whomever they see as powerful, this is how identities are formed; but finally if you are so lucky you will realize that your father, your civilization, society are also victims of the same irrational identification and as Go-d told the first spiritual seeker Abraham: Go To Yourself – by abandoning your identity into the Divine – you will become your infinite soul
