The Rebbe teaches us that though intrinsically a Jew is greater than Torah (as a prince is intrinsically greater than his professor) nonetheless in order for our essence to be revealed, for our true greatness, purity, holiness, Divinty to shine, it is necessary for us to have a professor that understands the way of God which we can then integrate into our conscious behavior (for our subconscious self is not necessarily our conscious behavior.)
