The pecking order

By zevi770 · January 18, 2016

Do you know your position?

You may not realize it, but we all have a pecking order position.

No society (to my limited knowledge) acknowledges this pecking order more than the Japanese – depending on your position in society, is how far down you should be bowing, so say when a judge meets a doctor perhaps the doctor must bow lower, but when the patient meets the doctor, the patient bows lower – a very important pecking order.

In democratic societies we like to think, we did away with the pecking order much as the communists thought they were all comrades.

But make no mistake about it, the pecking order always exists.

In truth there is some beauty to the pecking order, for it allows unity.

For example, if as a child I saw myself as a parent I couldn’t have a relationship with my parents.

If as a child I saw myself as an adult, I wouldn’t have created the deep intimate childhood bonds, when we feel small in the sea of adults.

And finally – though some people have really tried to remove this pecking order – if the wife doesn’t revere her husband why would she even want to be his wife?! and conversely if the husband doesn’t in truth love his wife, why would she seek the marriage.
