The Goal

Ask not what God can do for you, rather what you can do for God?! – what JFK meant to say : )
You see, we are born selfish; our desires are, “what will give me pleasure?” Part of our desires, having a mind, an independent thinking machine, is to discern the truth; so God obviously is the truth, however if our mission in life is a. our pleasure (and the corollary, no pain) as well as, b. the truth; well, then God, then becomes a tool for a.
In fact, the bigger question in life is, what is the goal of life? Not, what is the truth?
If anyone demonstrated that this is the bigger picture, it was the Lubavitcher Rebbe, a man of incredible spiritual heights.
For example, once my grandmother met him for a meeting, and she complained about an individual who wanted to change their synagogue from Orthodox to reform, so the Rebbe made various suggestions and she said “he is a very tuff person, and doesn’t listen to anyone” – so the Rebbe put his head a little lower and my grandmother said “his face was like on fire” and he looked up after five minutes (and to the Rebbe every minute was very precious) and said – “if that is the case, his father (whom he had a lot of respect for) will come and tell him” – the thing is, his father was already in the next world!
But unbelievably, the president of their synagogue came to my grandfather, the Rabbi, and said, he changed his mind – twenty years later on his deathbed, he told my grandfather, that his father came to him in a dream, and shouted at him.
So here’s a man, who the heavens were as comfortable to enter, to speak to a soul etc. as many other stories attest, as earth!
If that is the case, one would expect he devoted his life to high spiritual achievements; the Rebbe communicated with troubled teenagers as a pen-pal, he dealt with people’s issues, be they spiritual or material, his goal was Moshiach, his actions were simply being there for people!
But that’s the point, that the question is not, what you want from God! for that inevitably relates to your a., the question is, What does God want from you!
