The following are the different states we can be in

Now as Victor Frankel writes in his immortal book Man’s Search For Meaning that as he and the other prisoners, of the nazi killing machine were transported, not knowing, to another work location or a gas chamber, when they discovered it was work instead of gas they were elated – imagine that, if I told you that God forbid I would transfer you to slave labor – you probably wouldn’t be very happy, but if you think your chances of being gassed to death are high, than slave labor actually fills you with happiness – for the point Victor Frankel was making, our emotional state is not a rational state – when we are sad, even about something small, all of us is sad, and when we are happy, even about something small, all of us is happy.
The following are the five basic states a person can be in:
Happy – all’s well
Sad, all’s not well – worried
Angry, holding onto resentment
Now remember, each state has the power to eliminate the other state, so happiness can override sadness – as Victor Frankel’s example (although perhaps temporarily, if you go back to the worried sad state) and again, it can override anger as the example given in Chassidus, that a person rejoicing at his daughter’s wedding will dance even with his enemy for at that time his heart doesn’t feel resentment but joy.
In other words, our instincts only knows what it wants – this is how all animals, even angels in love (or awe) of God, operate – they don’t think, they follow their instinctually programmed desire – but we have been given by God a mind that has the ability to look objectively, not at what I desire, but what will be the result of our desire.
The problem of our brain, is that it is not a master but a subject to the emotions, for once a desire penetrates, as we see so clearly (say we all know from a brain perspective we should be eating healthy, but once we see a food we desire, our resolve is usually very weak, so it’s the desire controlling us) as the desire has the ability to not only override our brain, but actually change how we think (which is why boys who thought girls have the “disease cuties” before puberty, suddenly forget about that contagion and are madly in lust.)
Hence the only true ability to be objective – get beyond the virus of desires (that overrides our otherwise objective mind) is to use God’s mind – in other words, by tuning into a frequency that has no desires or definitely is not limited by any desire, we can objectively do the right thing – and the way to tune into this frequency is firstly as the Rebbe teaches the Mishnaic dictum “Appoint a Rabbi for yourself” – you should have a mashpia (a Chassidic Rabbi or Rebbetzin who you refer all life questions to- you can go to ask the rabbi on kabbalahwisdom.org or chabad.org) and according to Kabbalah, as you use this mechanism, God’s advice will somehow be the answer they give you – additionally you can go direct to God – you know, people think God doesn’t speak to people, that’s because people don’t know the mechanism – according to Kabbalah, if you ask God what to do, the first thought that comes into your mind was God’s reply to you – yes, there is freedom of choice to have faith or not, but I can tell you from personal experience as I have used this mechanism at least a million times (literally) and every time I listen to the first answer, the result is awesome.
