The difference between a human and an animal is this – the animal has desires – in fact we share 30 percent of our dna with a worm, 98% with a monkey – However the animal doesn’t have a rational thinking mind, so it simply is like a biological robot – it is attracted to whatever gives it pleasure, say food, and driven to recoil from pain – However a human being that is constantly thinking – even when we are not, our prefrontal lobes are, hence we begin to assume, that “I am my body,” “all the desires in me are me” – but when we mature we realize as the Alter Rebbe says, we certainly are not – rather, we are our soul, our Divine compassion! for a person cannot be that which he doesn’t choose
