The core notion of psychology is, as Dr. Kulic, both a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist told me, when at a Shabbos table we read the verse “even though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;” In other words, psychology agrees with what Jewish mysticism – mainly through the Tanya – clarifies: two emotions govern our lives, fear and love; fear tells us what not to do, love tells us what to do – to paraphrase the Baal Shem Tov: learn how to believe that all God does, is truly good (though you may not understand, which doesn’t mean you can’t believe and trust, thus taking away anxiety) and once we have no fears, our brain is free to choose who and what to love.
