The complete soul / body guide

Much ado has been made about the mind body soul.

Anyone who has read anything – from Aristotle to mysticism, from psychology to religion, knows one thing beyond a shadow of a doubt.

We are not one but at least two people.

If we were one, we would never have conflict.

So who are the people who inhabit our home.

First there is the animal – a little child is born like a little animal – the desires are effectively the same – run by a biological desire for pleasure, hardwired to react to food, milk, comfort, security etc. these functions keep us well fed, safe etc. – corresponding to the pleasure instinct is the desire to not have pain – again hardwired, is the sensation of pain from, too hot.. too cold.. certain foods, too sharp or too metallic.. sounds can be too loud – effectively positioning us to live in the world we are in and overall to make us stay away from danger.

All being well and our environment being secure we could technically live out life in this paradigm (attraction to pleasure and fear of pain) as all animals do – that’s gazillions of beings who have walked our earth and are walking.

But obviously we are far from an animal (though many wished this not be the case, in order to have no boundaries on their sexual fantasies) by the age of two, a child already has outpaced a grown ape in his language and mental abilities.

We are after all observers of reality (whether we call this our prefrontal lobes which no mammal has, that gives us extraordinary thinking ability).

Now these prefrontal lobes do something which few of us realize – they have an independent observation of reality.

Now buried deep in our subconscious lies two diametrically opposing forces, the first is God, the second the satan.

God is a noble virtuous desire – hence our tremendous noble and virtuous instincts.

But corresponding to God is the exact opposite, a being solely concerned with achieving personal fame.

As God cares for the other, the ego cares for myself.

As God is selfless, the ego is selfish.

As God is compassionate, the ego is cruel.
