God you are certainly an an enigma – more has been written about, for, to you; than anyone else, yet who exactly are we writing to?!

I recall reading a postcard sticking out of the western wall balancing by its corner in a crack, “To Whom It May Concern.”

Are you the vengeful Muslim God who will burn all non-believers in fire forever?

Are you a vengeful God that all who didn’t believe in Yoshkeh are condemned to eternal damnation?

Are you the Jewish God?

But within Judaism there are two general perceptions:

There is the legalistic God – concerned about doing his will, from how you tie your shoelaces, to how you go to the bathroom; from how you conduct business, to marital relationships – the God of ethics.

And then there is the mystical tradition; and this is who I believe you are.

You see, to unravel infinity, well, would take infinite time, and you still wouldn’t come to the end.

So actually it’s all very simple.

The mystics quote the verse, “From my own soul, I will know God.”

The human soul was particularly made to mirror God.

There are many facets, to the five dimensions and names of the soul, but as the Rebbe – the great and culminating mystic (this is important, for he was familiar with all previous works and just as in Jewish law we follow the final opinion, in Jewish mysticism too); So the Rebbe teaches, that the essence of God and our soul is beyond any name (as indicated in the fact that we say, “The soul has five names”, hence the soul is none of these name; for a name, especially on soul and Divine level merely indicates a facet – a particular characteristic.)

The Baal Shem Tov dared to reveal what no man before him ever did in these simple words:

The pure sincerity, sensitivity, compassion of a humble person is God!

In other words, if you have compassion, if you are sensitive toward the feelings of another, if you have not debased your soul by becoming a “pretender” – a false version of self to compensate on shame – if you are like a child, sincere compassion; you quite simply identify with the pain of another human being, you feel their pleasure as well – that is God.
