The Basic Premise

All people – at least those who believe in right and wrong – function on a basic premise
For example, the basic premise of an average American is democracy is wrong, totaleterism is right, and if you had a visceral effect to what I wrote, it’s because it goes against your basic premise, that democracy is right and totaliterism is wrong
However, someone growing in Saudi Arabia for example, has the reverse as a basic premise, his role models demonstrate that totaltirism which comes also in the form of parental abuse, killing girls for not behaving as their father decides etc. is right, and democracy, freedom to do what a person wishes, is wrong.
Of course much of the hate directed against the west today is as George Bush put it, a clash of civilizations, which is a clash of value systems.
But most importantly, which basic premise is right?
Is democracy’s basic premise right?
The answer is no.
The Rebbe teaches, though democracy brought a lot of good in terms of justice etc. it carries with it a fundamental flaw, which is the anarchy it causes, and we are also witnessing today.
The basic premise of God, is that we are here to follow his wishes, which succinctly put, are to always be kind, considerate, compassionate and never cruel, mean or obnoxious and to always strive to grow in this.
The basic premise that puts God at the center does much to facilitate human humility hence growth.
Democracy that puts US in the center, for we are masters of our density, masters of fate, unfortunately allows for the basic premise to be carried forward, so if we decide, as happened in Germany democratically God-forbid to kill Jews, as there was no God centered democracy, then the basic premise became a springboard for all kinds of malevolence.
