Succinctly put, life is like a car – a car really only has two directions, forward and reverse – well sometimes it’s simply paralyzed – we too have a car, these are our thoughts, speech and action, and as the Alter Rebbe teaches, every thought you will ever think, every word you will ever say, and everything you will ever do comes from either a forward or reverse motion – it is either based on a desire for or a desire to get away from – though we can also sometimes become paralyzed (a side-effect of fear that we don’t know how to process) – however this is the good news, the bad news is we have multiple different cars – our first car is the Divine soul which desires to do what it wants, namely connect to God, and like a child desires not to be separated – the second soul is the animal, which desires to gain pleasure and is afraid of pain, the third is the demon called ego, which desires power and hates shame – however it has a vile side-effect, namely if it feels violated it desires vengeance (this is also the side effect of jealousy, to rape those who have what you believe you should – this is why getting rid of the ego is the primary spiritual direction, for without it, our Divine soul, instead of our maliciousness, manifests)
