There are effectively three competing tendencies, in every person
The strongest is our ego
The next, is our emotional instinctual attraction to pleasure and fear of pain
And the smartest – in fact, the only sense of truth within us – and likewise, if we so choose to (which can only come about when we are humble, for the egotistical person lacks all self-discipline) is of course, our conscious thinking!
