The significance of the ma-an, is that it’s actually spirituality – which like dew (or like an ice crystal) as it falls to earth, becomes a substance.

Though it is now a substance, nonetheless it never loses its former spirit.

This is similar to Torah (and in fact, all mediums through which we receive) that though the Torah may be dealing with legal issues (materialistic matters) it never really leaves its essence, the fact that it’s a spirit.

The greatness of Yisroi coming to the Jewish people – which as the Zohar says, enabled God to give the Torah – is because though the Torah empowers – the true transformation of darkness to light occurs precisely (not when we just do God’s will) but through iskafya, and ishapacha (repressing our evil, or transforming our passion to positive passion.)

As Yisroi was a genius, and had studied all secular wisdom (including the wisdom of idolatry, which in a more refined way means, all of seder hishtalshalus) and he came to recognize, that there is but one God, this means, not only was his recognition, meaningful, but furthermore, added (as his name Yisroi – addition – implies) to the Torah.

1. There are three levels, there is the Jew below ascending, there is God above, descending; then there is when God merges – this process, is: firstly, God comes to the Tzaddikim / Rebbes and then comes to us – this inculcates, as the verses states, that in the messianic era- “Man will no longer need teachers, for all will know me.”

Rebbe Mamer – Vayeishev Yakov Chof Kislev

What was the sin of eating the forbidden fruit?

The sin was, as it states, the tree looked beautiful – it was not the beauty of the tree that was the problem, it was for the physical beauty.

Even before he ate, there was a taste of the food, but as man is a composite of both a body and a soul, heavenly and earthly attributes, his soul dominated (hence he experienced spiritual and not physical delight.)

The problem of the sin, which includes the sexual desire, was, previously, as they were only spiritual, therefore whatever they did was no different, to say the Mitzvah of putting on Teffilin; but as desire for the physical entered, this debased man.

From that time onward, two distinct realities exist – there is the lower realm in which there is no good without evil and no evil without good, and then there is the pure Divine, and the soul.

Now the soul like a child, is deeply attached to her father – nonetheless, the soul comes into a physical body, and the body has physical desires.

It is the role of the soul, the mind and the spirit, through arousing, awakening, through contemplation, mainly in Davening) the extraordinary love for God, who is absolutely infinite (relative to us tiny puny finite beings) which will give our spirit, the ability to be the driving force – when we do this, and we use the physical for the spiritual, we reverse engineer the world (as God took spirit and made matter, and we transform matter into spirit – heralding in the time of complete knowledge in the messianic era.)
