Reb Mendel Futerfas was asked, as many Jews were, by the communists, to be a spy, and they said to him, “if you will, we will let you out of jail, instead of killing you; and we’ll take care of you and your family forever!” and Reb Mendel said to them like this “I am a religious Jew, I believe in God, if it’s my time to die, then you can let me out and I’ll die anyway, and if it’s not my time to die, then you can’t kill me!” He was at the firing line and an order came from Moscow to give him instead of death I think ten or twenty years hard labor, and he lived well into his nineties!
