Reality is simple, there are only four possible states all people are in – the first is the state of love – when a person loves this is a generalized desire – this desire manifests in many ways, like a magnet picking up many metals – It has the desire for pleasure (which is why people get addicted to drugs) it is the desire for friendship, the desire for sex, the desire for recognition etc. – Then there is the depressed state – this is when a person feels ashamed of themselves – this creates lack of desire, for if I don’t like the source of my desires (myself) I don’t like the consequential desires either – this is why a depressed person generally lacks desire – Then there is bitterness – this is when a person feels unjustifiably abused – this obviously happens very often – this creates anger, and anger is a desire for vengeance; however most often it is not feasible, for often the people who abused you did so only in the knowledge of your lack of ability to take vengeance – this create a perpetual anger, and this anger then creates a new emotion – jealousy over those who weren’t abused, and the jealousy creates hate, and the hate is rationalizing of the evil that others do – (for the person who loves doesn’t see evil, while the person who hates, only sees evil) now a person has the perfect cause to abuse another, and in this way to turn them into an angry person thus minimizing their jealousy – Of-course as we see historicly, hurting another doesn’t rid oneself of their pain – This phenomena is behind bullying, antisemitism, anti-americans etc. – Then there is the ultimate stage, for obviously the previous three stages are all selfish – not that there isn’t good in the loving stage, but ultimately, it is loving people who can become depressed or carry restatement and become evil; hence the only true stage is whereby one willfully understands, that without Divine guidance they are capable of all the criminal evil that ever occurred (for, were not those people originally loving? – certainly people are not born jealous nor bitter!) and by subduing one’s impulses to the Divine voice (be it the Biblical teachings as taught by a competent Rabbi or requesting Divine guidance and adhering to the first thought, which as Chassidus teaches is a way to get Divine guidance) only in this way does man have the capacity to be good and not evil.
