Rashi the great wise etc. commentator says, when people are secure they are nice – now as we know, when people are insecure they become mean (out of jealousy) however and this is the crux of truth – being nice is not the same as being good – for the former is an instinct – much like dogs are social – a dog once asked the lion "why is it they call you the king of the animals, yet I am so social and am called a dog?" – "don’t you understand" said the lion, "you go to whoever feeds you"
